Memories of the Corner Grocery Store
The little corner grocery store has a long history in small towns and communities everywhere in Ontario. Recollections from the 1950s and 1960s, of our being sent to the corner store by mother, to get a couple of items needed for supper, evokes crystal clear memories for us all. It might have been just down the street or three blocks away, but the trip to the corner store was as much a part of our growing up years as playing in the back yard. It gave us a sense of independence, a responsibility within the family and often evoked the typical child’s response of, “Awe, do I have to?”.
